Teen who lived in his car graduates high school, earns full-ride college scholarship
Max Jones was raised in North Carolina, where he frequently faced difficult circumstances, including financial hardship and unstable housing while living with his mother and half-siblings, WDTV 5 reports.
Despite the adversity he faced, 19-year-old Max Jones persevered through.
Max Jones faced constant challenges growing up
Jones was raised in North Carolina, where he frequently faced difficult circumstances, including financial hardship and unstable housing while living with his mother and half-siblings, WDTV 5 reports.
“She did work a lot when we were growing up, an extreme amount,” Jones told the outlet.
Determined to create a better future for himself, the 19-year-old made the deliberate choice to leave North Carolina and relocate to Richmond, Virginia. There, he enrolled at George Wythe High School to complete his senior year.
Despite ongoing hardships, Jones stayed committed to his education. At times, he wore the same clothes day after day and lived out of his car—a vehicle he bought with wages from a local restaurant job. Still, he managed to maintain a 3.4 GPA, a testament to his determination and resilience.
“I went through a lot,” he said to WDTV 5. “I was homeless for a long period of time.”
Max Jones received community support
Jones occasionally found support through the kindness of mentors and teachers, who offered him meals, temporary shelter in their homes, and even complimentary hotel stays during particularly difficult times.
“It wasn’t every single day but every other day when they could,” Jones said to WDTV 5.
Leading up to graduation, Jones received a blessing from New Life Deliverance Tabernacle Pastor Robert Winfrey, who opened up the church doors and allowed Jones to rest, shower, and eat, with meals provided.
“I wanted to make sure that he wasn’t completely dismantled because of his situation,” Winfrey explained to the outlet
Now on the brink of graduation, Jones has gained a clear sense of purpose and direction for his future.
“Maybe I might not be fully conscious of what I’m saying right now, but I’m going to change the world and I’m going to give back to everybody that gave to me. Everybody,” Jones expressed, per WDTV 5.
Full ride scholarships
Jones has a bright and promising future ahead. His academic achievements have earned him several full-ride scholarships from institutions including Paine College in Augusta, Georgia; Virginia Union University in Richmond; and The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.
