Hannah Smith, an HBCU graduate who made headlines after surviving a catastrophic boating accident in the Bahamas, has finally been discharged from a Florida hospital. This marks a major milestone in her recovery.

HBCU graduate survived catastrophic boating accident

Smith, 22, had been celebrating her graduation from Miles College when a cruise excursion turned tragic. On May 12, while the boat docked at a port in the Bahamas, Smith fell into the water and the propeller struck her, severing both her legs. Two women aboard the vessel quickly pulled her back to safety, initiating a medical emergency that would span months and test her physical and emotional endurance.

“When we stopped at a port in the Bahamas, I went on an excursion and, unfortunately, the boat propellers kind of dismembered my legs,” Smith told 7News. “I had to get them amputated in the hospital — [my left] one was done in the Bahamas — and then I was airlifted to Miami.”

Critical Condition and Intensive Recovery

Smith returned to the U.S. in critical condition and entered Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital in Cutler Bay. There, she underwent multiple surgeries and completed three hours of physical therapy daily to rebuild strength and mobility. Her care team praised her determination and resilience throughout the grueling recovery process.

“It’s just a big win for something I didn’t see a couple months ago when I first had my accident, so big motivation,” said Smith, reflecting on her progress.

Hannah Smith Gains Strength in Spirit

Despite the trauma, Smith remains grateful for the gift of life. “I traded my legs for my life,” she said. “Very proud of myself, just being able to do a lot of my basic hygiene and get around, transfer.”

Now discharged, Smith will continue outpatient therapy and begin preparing for prosthetic fittings. Her next chapter includes healing, adapting, and inspiring others through her story.

Faith, Family, and Community Support

Smith credits her faith and her parents for helping her stay positive through the darkest moments. “Besides God, definitely my parents — when I have any sad moments, they pulled me straight out of it,” she said. “If I don’t think I could do something, they tell me I can. I don’t think I’d be as positive in this situation without them.”

GoFundMe campaign created

Her family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to support her ongoing rehabilitation and equipment needs. So far, more than $65,000 has been raised by supporters moved by her courage and determination.

Hannah Smith’s positive outlook ahead

As Smith transitions to life beyond the hospital, she encourages others to stay hopeful in the face of adversity. Her journey, marked by strength, faith, and community, continues to inspire.
