The family of Demartravion “Trey” Reed, a 21-year-old Delta State University student, has retained nationally renowned civil rights attorney Ben Crump to lead an independent investigation into Reed’s death.

Authorities discovered Reed hanging from a tree near the university’s pickleball courts on the morning of September 15.

Crump announced his involvement Tuesday, stating in a post on social media, “We’ve been retained by Trey Reed’s family. They deserve answers, not vague conclusions. Too many questions remain.” He pledged to lead a coalition of civil rights leaders and organizations in pursuit of transparency and justice.

Questions about Demartravion Trey Reed’s death

Reed’s death has sparked widespread concern across the campus and beyond. Although the Bolivar County Coroner reported no signs of foul play, many, including Congressman Bennie Thompson, have called for a federal investigation. Thompson emphasized Mississippi’s painful history of racial violence and urged the FBI to ensure a full and impartial inquiry.

“Trey was a young man full of promise and warmth,” Crump said. “He was deeply loved and respected by all who knew him. His family and the campus community deserve a thorough, independent investigation to uncover the truth about what happened”.

During a September 16 press conference, Attorney Vanessa J. Jones, of Jones Law Firm, also retained by the family, said they will be conducting an independent investigation.

“We will seek answers independently from Delta State University and from the coroner’s office and, if need be, independent from the state coroner’s office because we need answers as to what happened to Trey Reed,” Jones said. “Were there cameras? There should have been cameras at the university that could easily enlighten us to what happened in the early morning of September 15, 2025.

University’s response after the tragic incident

Delta State University officials closed the campus the day they discovered Reed’s body. In a video statement, President Dan Ennis expressed condolences and affirmed the university’s cooperation with authorities. He asked for continued patience and prayers as the investigation unfolds.

Active investigation into Trey Reed’s death

This case remains under active investigation. Investigators sent Reed’s remains to the Mississippi State Crime Lab for autopsy, but they have not released final conclusions.
