Black Public Media support

NEW YORK — Black Public Media (BPM), a Harlem-based nonprofit, is urging public support after Congress rescinded $1.8 million in federal funding last July. The organization, founded in 1979, has invested $17 million in films and immersive projects highlighting the Black experience.

Black Public Media’s Fundraising Goal

BPM launched a grassroots campaign to raise $9 million over two years. The plan includes individual donations, foundation grants, and corporate contributions. Leaders emphasize that donations made by GivingTuesday, December 2, will directly support the Black Stories Production Fund.

Protecting Black Narratives

The Fund emerged after the federal government defunded the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, once BPM’s largest supporter. CPB is now winding down operations.

“Public media is for every American, and every American should be reflected in its programs and documentaries,” said Executive Director Leslie Fields-Cruz. “This year, the public must take a stand to ensure Black stories are never again subject to political whims.”

Black Public Media’s Donation & Support Options

Supporters can contribute as little as $5 or make larger gifts at BPM’s donation portal. Foundations and funders are also invited to back the Black Stories Production Fund.

Films and Legacy Projects

The Fund will sustain landmark works such as Chisholm ’72: Unbought & Unbossed, Ailey, I Am Not Your Negro, and Mr. Soul. Upcoming projects include The Inquisitor, a Barbara Jordan documentary premiering in January 2026.

Nurturing Creatives

For decades, BPM has nurtured filmmakers who brought Black stories to screens nationwide. The nonprofit also supports emerging technologists in virtual reality, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence. By connecting creators to tools and opportunities, BPM ensures immersive projects reach audiences with impact.
