Ending its 2013-2014 season, The Two River Theater Co. presents Third, a play by Pulitzer Prize-winner Wendy Wasserstein. “Third” is Wasserstein’s last play written shortly before she died of cancer in 2005. Many critics have described Third as her wittiest, wisest, and perhaps most personal play.
Third takes place at a small New England college during one academic year. It focuses on the life of a female college professor at a prestigious liberal arts college, Laurie Jameson. How her life and assumptions are challenged by an encounter with a student, Woodson Bull, III nicknamed Third.
The professor and student have strongly varied personal and political characteristics. Because of these differences, the professor accuses the student of plagiarism when he turns in an assignment that seems beyond his ability to produce. The play wrestles with the issues of stereotyping and identity politics, as well as generational and family issues.
Third includes an award-winning cast, Amy Hohn (Nancy), J.R. Horne (Jack Jameson), Annette O’Toole (Laurie Jameson), Christopher Sears (Woodson Bull III), and Emily Walton (Emily Jameson) that does an amazing job making this humorous yet educational play come to life. With its lessons on ethics, stereotypes, class distinction, and prejudges, Third is certainly a play that will resonate for a lifetime. This timeless piece will have you questioning your mirrored image.
Directed by an Obie-winning and Tony Award-nominated actor Michael Cumpsty, Third is running at The Two River Theater until June 22nd with tickets starting at $20.
