JACKSONVILLE, Texas — A 15‑year‑old boy died last Saturday after rescuing his 5‑year‑old autistic cousin from drowning at Lake Jacksonville, according to KYTX. Rhilynn Myers entered the lake without hesitation when the child drifted away on a flotation device.

According to Jacksonville police, Myers swam toward the child as the device moved farther from shore. Then he called out for help. Soon after, he went under the water. Nearby Good Samaritans pulled him out and began lifesaving efforts. However, Myers was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Family Says Myers Acted Instinctively

Myers’ grandfather, Jason Myers, told KYTX that the teen reacted immediately. Moreover, he said the family tried reaching the child first but struggled. “Then Rhilynn tried to swim after her also, and that’s where he started cramping up,” he said.

School District Honors a Kind‑Hearted Student

Myers, a sophomore and football player at Rusk High School, was remembered as curious, thoughtful and deeply protective of classmates. Additionally, the district said his smile “lit up a room” and his humor kept friends laughing. Coaches described him as a determined athlete whose kindness left a lasting impression.

GoFundMe Created; Community Support Surges After Teen’s Death

A GoFundMe created for Myers’ family has raised more than $14,000. Therefore, loved ones say the support will help cover funeral and memorial expenses. “He was deeply loved by his family and friends,” the fundraiser reads. “His memory will stay with us forever.”

Myers is being honored as a teen whose final act saved a child’s life. Meanwhile, relatives say they will remember him as funny, outgoing and full of heart.
