A Different World Sequel Netflix

Netflix has set a September 24, 2026 premiere date for its A Different World sequel series which will launch the exact day the original NBC sitcom premiered in 1987. The new single‑camera comedy will feature 10 half‑hour episodes, all dropping at once.

The streamer released new key art and a teaser featuring Maleah Joi Moon, who stars as Deborah Wayne, the daughter of Hillman icons Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy) and Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison). In a nod to the original series, Deborah sports her father’s signature flip‑up glasses in the teaser.

A Different World Sequel

The sequel returns viewers to Hillman College, where Deborah begins her freshman year while navigating the weight of her family legacy. She joins a new generation of students representing a wide spectrum of Black campus life, including:

  • Rashida Duvall (Alijah Kai), a first‑gen criminal justice major
  • Shaquille Johnson (Cornell Young IV), a five‑star athlete
  • Amir Rodale (Jordan Aaron Hall), a psychology major
  • Hazel Henry (Kennedi Reece), a small‑town church‑raised freshman
  • Kojo Achebe (Chibuikem Uche), a Ghanaian‑Nigerian fashion entrepreneur

Several original cast members — including:

  • Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Cree Summer, and Darryl M. Bell — will reprise their roles.

Creative Team Honors the Legacy

Showrunner Felicia Pride and executive producer/director Debbie Allen unveiled the premiere date during Netflix’s Celebration of Black Television at the American Black Film Festival. Pride and Allen emphasized the importance of revisiting Hillman at this cultural moment.

Allen, who directed much of the original series, returns to direct episodes of the sequel. She called the revival “a testament to the power and relevance of the show” and said the team is committed to doing it “right now.”
