T.I., Scrapp Deleon, and the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, GA worked together to bail out 23 nonviolent inmates.
Bail Out Program
The three reportedly bailed out 7 women and 16 men jailed for first-time or nonviolent offenses.
The church carried out the deed as part of its “Bail Out” program.
According to Fox 5, New Birth Missionary launched the “Bail Out” program on Lent (March 6).
Donations
The church pledged to raise $40,000 but when T.I. and Scrapp got involved, the donations reportedly catapulted to $120,000.
Dr. Jamal Bryant, senior pastor at New Birth Baptist Church, praised his congregation’s donations and support for the program.
“It’s almost like finally meeting the good Samaritan—somebody who you don’t know that you didn’t see coming,” he said, according to Fox 5.
“[The recipients are] appreciative to be able to press the refresh button.”
In addition to raising funds to assist with releasing inmates from jail, the “Bail Out” program will connect newly-released citizens with a certified mentor for weekly check-ins.
Organizers will use a portion of the donation to establish college funds for former inmates with children.
