A Wisconsin woman has been charged in connection to the death of her neighbor, a beloved dentist, after she allegedly shot him during a dispute about loud music.

Keionna McGowan, 27, was charged with second-degree reckless homicide for the April 19 fatal shooting of Akintunde Bowden, 41, according to WISN-ABC.

According to the criminal complaint, Brown Deer police were called to an apartment complex to investigate a report of shots fired. When they arrived, a woman, later identified as McGowan, yelled, “Help! He’s in my house, number 207.”

At the apartment, officers found a man, later identified as Bowden, lying face down on the entryway with a gunshot wound to his lower abdomen, according to the criminal complaint. Despite life-saving measures, Bowden was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The suspect’s story

McGowan was reportedly in her apartment doing her hair and trying on clothes while listening to music when she heard aggressive banging at her door.

McGowan told investigators that after looking through the peephole and opening the door, she saw “a large man who appeared to be intoxicated” who began yelling intelligibly about the music. She told police that she felt uncomfortable due to the man’s threatening behavior.

According to court documents, McGowan reportedly told the man she would turn down the music and she closed the door. She then heard the man kicking her door with “enough force to shake the apartment”, leading her to believe he might break in.

McGowan retrieved a gun and reopened the door. She told officers she fired one shot when the man made a “kicking motion.”

The victim’s fiancée told investigators that Bowden had been home watching basketball. She said while there had been previous noise complaints about McGowan’s apartment, interactions had been civil and Bowden never personally confronted the resident about the music.

Bowden was a dentist at Milwaukee Health Services.

If convicted, McGowan faces up to 25 years in prison, with the possibilit9y of an additional five years for using a dangerous weapon. She could also face up to $100,000 in fines.

A criminal complaint is merely an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
