Newark Public Schools offers $74K teaching contracts to graduating seniors
Newark Public Schools extended $74,000 conditional teaching contracts to 34 graduating seniors during their high school commencement.

In a groundbreaking initiative, Newark Public Schools extended $74,000 conditional teaching contracts to 34 graduating seniors during their high school commencement ceremonies.
Newark Public Schools offers teaching contracts
The recipients, primarily from East Side High School and University High School, completed the Red Hawks Rising Teacher Academy, a dual-enrollment program developed in partnership with Montclair State University and the American Federation of Teachers.
The conditional contracts are contingent upon the students earning a bachelor’s degree and obtaining New Jersey state teaching certification.
Upon fulfilling these requirements, the graduates will return to Newark classrooms as full-time educators, earning a starting salary significantly above the city’s average entry-level wage.
Ceremonial Highlights
At Arts High School, graduate Miguel Rodriguez Bermudez was publicly presented with a framed contract by Superintendent Roger León, who praised the student’s aspirations to become a music teacher and acknowledged the sacrifices of his single mother.
Alliana Abreu, a graduate of Barringer High School, received a conditional offer to serve as an athletic trainer upon completion of her postsecondary education.
Newark Public Schools Leadership Perspectives
Newark Public Schools Superintendent León described the initiative as “an investment in homegrown talent and a long-term strategy to build a pipeline of teachers who reflect and understand our students.” Newark Board of Education President Hasani K. Council echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of empowering graduates to serve the very communities that shaped them.
This initiative not only celebrates academic achievement but also exemplifies a forward-thinking approach to educational equity and workforce development.
