Richardson served as president from 1984 to 2010. His 26-year tenure marked a period of unprecedented growth and renewal for the institution.

Under his leadership, Morgan expanded academic offerings and established new schools. These included the School of Architecture, the School of Social Work, and the School of Global Communications.

He led Morgan’s transition to a doctoral research university. Morgan State University increased enrollment, raised student qualifications, and invested over $500 million to modernize campus facilities.

“Dr. Richardson built the foundation we stand on today,” said current President David K. Wilson. “His vision continues to guide our progress.”

Wilson added, “I am deeply humbled to follow in his footsteps. His leadership restored confidence when Morgan’s future was uncertain.”

Excellence at its finest

Richardson earned numerous honors for his service. These included the Citizenship Award and recognition from President Barack Obama for contributions to higher education.

He is remembered as a visionary who believed in the power of education to transform lives. His legacy lives on through students, faculty, and alumni.

Morgan State University extended condolences to Richardson’s family and loved ones. The family has not yet announced the funeral arrangements.

The university encouraged the community to honor Richardson’s legacy by continuing the mission he championed.
