GoFundMe launched for Cleveland deacon recovering after brutal attack outside church
CLEVELAND — A GoFundMe now supports longtime community leader and deacon Ronald Kisner, who remains in the ICU after a brutal March 22 attack outside Greater Abyssinia Baptist Church.
Deacon Ronald Kisner Hurt While Trying to Protect Others
Kisner had just left Sunday service when he saw a man assaulting people in the church parking lot. Witnesses say he stepped in to calm the situation and shield a woman from harm. However, the confrontation escalated, and he became the target of a violent assault.
Family members say he was beaten and pushed down a flight of stairs. “By the grace of God, Ronald survived,” the GoFundMe states. Police later apprehended the suspect.
Cleveland deacon attack: Severe Injuries and ICU Recovery
Kisner is now in the ICU trauma unit at a local hospital. Relatives say he suffered multiple fractures, swelling around his optic nerve, and serious injuries to his shoulder, wrist, and back. They note that he is alert and communicating by writing, but they expect a long recovery.
“He has a long road ahead,” the fundraiser explains, adding that the family is grateful for community support.
Ronald Kisner: A Life of Service in Cleveland
Kisner is well known across Cleveland. He is a kidney‑transplant survivor, a former Jet Magazine writer, and a retired employee of the Cleveland Municipal School System. He also serves as a deacon at Greater Abyssinia Baptist Church and is described as a devoted brother, uncle, and friend.
The GoFundMe highlights his decades of service, saying, “Ronald has always shown up for others. Now we are asking for others to show up for him.”
Fundraiser Created to Support Medical Care
The fundraiser aims to help cover medical bills, rehabilitation, and ongoing care. Organizers say no donation is too small and ask supporters to pray for his recovery or share the page.
Police have not released additional details about the suspect, but they confirm officers took the man into custody shortly after the attack.
