Remembering a Civil Rights Legend

If Malcolm were alive today, we would be celebrating his 90th birthday.

Born Malcolm Little in Omaha, Nebraska, on May 19, 1925, a younger Shabazz emerged from prison poised to become one of the most influential voices in the black nationalist and liberation movements.

His views were more “militant” than other Black leaders. Nonetheless, his ultimate fight was for equal justice for Black people.

Before he was assassinated on Feb. 19, 1965, Malcolm X was a former leader to thousands of followers in the predominantly Black Muslim organization Nation of Islam. He renounced his more militant views and preached racial reconciliation.

1. “They asked if I knew what ‘conscientious objector’ meant. I told them that when the white man asked me to go off somewhere and fight and maybe die to preserve the way the white man treated the black man in America, then my conscience made me object.”

On feelings

3. “Any person who claims to have deep feeling for other human beings should think a long, long time before he votes to have other men kept behind bars — caged.
