The tragic killing of Sonya Massey

On July 6, 2024, 36-year-old Sonya Massey called 911 because she feared a prowler was in her backyard.

Officers responded to Massey’s 911 call. During the brief time in her home, Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Grayson ordered Massey to turn off a pot of boiling water.

When she complied, Grayson’s demeanor quickly changed. While she posed no threat, Grayson shot Massey in the face and killed her after she said, “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus.”

A mother, a daughter and sister

In mere moments, Sonya Massey’s family lost a mother, a daughter and sister.

Sonya is remembered as a caring and loving mother to her two children, a 17-year-old son and a 15-year-old daughter. Sonya loved cooking, doing hair, nurturing her children, and spending time with her family. She was also a devoted church member.

“The outpouring of love and support has been tremendous, but our family needs financial support as we fight for justice”, the GoFundMe reads.

“Our family will likely need mental health counseling and support, money for travel costs and money for household support as we miss work to pursue justice for Sonya Massey.”
