University Police Chief Michael Peeler stated that officers discovered Reed’s body around 7:05 a.m. on September 15. The Bolivar County Coroner’s Office retrieved the body, and a full autopsy is pending. “As of this time, there’s no evidence of foul play,” Peeler said. “While there’s no evidence of foul play, the body has been retrieved by the Bolivar County Coroner’s Office”.

Online reactions have described the incident as a lynching, invoking the U.S. South’s history of racial violence against Black Americans. However, law enforcement has not classified the death as racially motivated. Peeler emphasized that investigators are actively reviewing the case and urged the public not to draw premature conclusions.

Delta State University President Daniel Ennis expressed condolences to Reed’s family and the campus community. “Our community is deeply saddened by this loss,” Ennis said. “We extend heartfelt sympathy to all impacted by Trey’s passing”.

University’s response

In response to the tragedy, the university canceled all classes and centennial events scheduled for Monday. University officials opened the campus chapel for prayer and provided counseling services to students, faculty, and staff. Ennis stated that campus operations may resume Tuesday, pending further review.
