5-year-old Ranajai Hill from Vicksburg, Mississippi, is being recognized as a hero after saving his family from a fire that destroyed their home just two days after Thanksgiving.
Early Morning Fire in Mississippi Sparks Heroic Response
According to WAPT, the child was watching television early Saturday morning when he noticed flames spreading nearby. Instead of freezing, he ran to wake his grandmother, Jennifer Smith, and warned her about the danger.
Inside the home were the boy, his younger sister, his grandmother, and two uncles. Because of his fast response, all five escaped unharmed, wearing only the clothes they had on.
Vicksburg, Mississippi Fire Department Confirms Cause
The Vicksburg Fire Department reported the blaze started from a gas space heater and quickly consumed the residence. Officials declared the home a total loss.
Smith said losing their belongings was devastating, but she expressed gratitude that her family survived.
5-year-old Ranajai’s Courage
Though shy and soft‑spoken, the boy’s awareness and compassion stood out. His grandmother emphasized that his courage saved their lives.
“Without him being the brave hero he was, it could have been worse. I don’t even want to explain,” Smith said.
Community Comes Together To Support Mississippi Family
The family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to replace clothing and essentials lost in the fire. The fundraiser has raised nearly $500 as they begin rebuilding their lives.
Smith said she remains proud of her grandson’s bravery and thankful for the community’s support.
