A day after the Charleston massacre, a man tried to enter a black church and threatened to kill it’s parishioners, cops say.
Police in South Richmond, Virginia raced to the United Nations Church International after being warned that a large white man was banging on the door making threats to kill the parishioners inside, while using racially loaded terminology.
The man approached the church after they held a special prayer meeting for the victims in Charleston, S.C. and began yelling racial slurs.
A Facebook post describes :
On yesterday evening, after teaching and a special prayer meeting for our brothers and sisters in Charleston, SC a white male approached our church with a weapon we thought was a machete. He began yelling obscenities and racial epithets while threatening to kill all the niggers at the church. Upon alert, we locked down the church to keep the assailant outside and to keep our parishioners safe. At this point, he began banging on the doors and windows, continuing to threaten myself, other parishioners and all of the “n–gers” present.
A police officer at the South Richmond church confronted the man and drew her weapon. The man refused to drop the object he was carrying until seven police cars attended the scene, reports say.
Police said it had initially been feared that the man was armed, but it later emerged he had a section of plastic.
Captain Chris Gleason said the man was taken into custody but after his officers consulted with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office it emerged that he had not broken any law.
The man was committed to a mental facility for an emergency 72-hour psychiatric evaluation.
