On Tuesday, actress Octavia Spencer announced the death of her close friend in an Instagram post.
“My friend @sonyaeddy passed away last night,” Spencer captioned a headshot of Eddy. “The world lost another creative angel. Her legions of @generalhospitalabc fans will miss her 💔🕊️”
Eddy died from complications of non-emergency surgery, a close friend of the actress told TMZ Tuesday.
Pal Tyler Ford explained that Eddy went in for a pre-scheduled procedure on Dec. 9 and was released on Dec. 11.
However, the soap star began to feel ill and returned to the hospital on Dec. 15.
Doctors then discovered that Eddy had developed an infection that became uncontainable, said Tyler.
By Monday morning, she was placed on life support and died later that night.
Veteran actress
Born in Concord, Calif., on June 17, 1967, Eddy studied theatre and dance at the University of California, Davis. She obtained her bachelors of arts degree in 1992, but began her acting career with Ruby Dee’s play “Zora Is My Name” in 1990. Eddy’s additional stage credits include “The Comedy of Errors,” portraying The Witch in Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Woods” and playing Bloody Mary in “South Pacific.”
Eddy was most notable for her role as a nurse on tv’s long running soap opera, General Hospital. The character served as head nurse, and was the mother to Stan Johnson (played by Kiko Ellsworth) who was killed off from the show in 2007 following a mob hit. Her last episode as the nurse was aired in November 2020. In real life, Eddy was also a licensed vocational nurse.
In addition to General Hospital, Eddy appeared in a list of television series and films including Married … With Children, Inspector Gadget, Barbershop, Daddy Daycare, Matchstick Men, Bad News Bears, Seven Pounds, The Perfect Game and Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday. Her 2022 projects included the films Frank and Penelope, Satanic Hispanics, and V/H/S/99.
In honor of Eddy’s memory, donations can be made to The Foundation of the National Student Nurses’ Association Inc.
