Shonda Rhimes Donates $1.5M to Turn Barn Where Emmett Till Was Killed Into Memorial
The gift will purchase the Mississippi barn where Till was tortured and murdered.

Shonda Rhimes has donated $1.5 million to the Emmett Till Interpretive Center.
The gift will purchase the Mississippi barn where Till was tortured and murdered. The site will be preserved and rebuilt as a “sacred” memorial for truth-telling and remembrance.
Emmett Till Memorial Planned for 2030
The memorial is expected to open in 2030, marking the 75th anniversary of Till’s death. Organizers plan to transform the barn into a permanent site of reflection. The project emphasizes remembrance and ensures Till’s legacy remains central to the national story.
Broader Preservation Effort
This initiative is part of a larger plan to protect other significant locations tied to Till’s life and murder. The courthouse where the trial occurred and the river where his body was found will also be preserved.
Purpose and Legacy
Rhimes said the donation ensures the Till family remains the victor in the story. She emphasized that the truth of the events must endure. The project highlights justice, remembrance, and the importance of preserving history for future generations.
