The Crash on Netflix renews national attention, inspires scholarship fund honoring Davion Flanagan
Netflix’s The Crash has revived interest in the 2022 crash that killed Davion Flanagan. His family has raised more than $85,000 for a memorial scholarship supporting aspiring barbers.

STRONGVILLE, OH— The family of Davion Flanagan is turning renewed national attention from Netflix’s The Crash into action through a growing memorial scholarship fund. The documentary has pushed the 2022 Strongsville crash back into the spotlight and revived interest in the case.
Documentary Reopens Interest in Fatal 2022 Crash
The Crash examines the collision that killed Flanagan and Dominic Russo. Prosecutors said Mackenzie Shirilla intentionally drove into a building at 100 mph. The crash happened on July 31, 2022. Shirilla was 17 at the time. A jury convicted her on two counts of murder. She is serving two concurrent 15‑to‑life sentences.
The documentary has drawn national viewers and renewed public debate. Flanagan’s family says the attention is difficult but also meaningful.
Family Builds Scholarship Fund to Honor Davion’s Legacy
A GoFundMe created by Flanagan’s mother has raised more than $97,000. The money supports the Davion Flanagan Memorial Scholarship Fund. The fund helps low‑income students pursue barber training. Tuition for the program at Allstate Hairstyling & Barber College costs $16,000, which many young adults cannot afford.
The family says Davion wanted to help others succeed. They believe the scholarship reflects his values.
“Davion had such a generous and kind soul,” the family wrote. “He loved helping others and went out of his way to show people they were valued and worthy.” They said the scholarship will help Davion “live on forever” while supporting new barbers.
A Legacy Rooted in Kindness and Opportunity
Flanagan planned to pursue barbering before his death. His family says the fund honors that dream. They hope the scholarship will create opportunities for students who need support.
As The Crash reaches national audiences, the family wants the focus to shift toward Davion’s legacy. They believe the fund will help others build the future he wanted for himself and his community.
