Black Web Series To Watch
Black creatives are no longer waiting for the film industry to get their voices heard, they are taking it right to the web.
Black web series are dominating the internet.
I know many of you may remember the days when you could turn on the television and watch quality Black programming.
From The Cosby Show, Family Matters, to Fresh Prince of Bel Air, I got my weekly fix of great black programs as a child.
It seems today we are flooded with reality television that quality Black sitcoms are slim to none.
Black writers, directors, producers, & actors are no longer waiting for the film industry to get their voices heard, they are taking it right to the web.
Now, I’ve been doing some browsing, and checking out some other sites list. While their lists were enthusing, it wasn’t quite diverse. So I came up with an interesting list of Black web series, providing an explanation underneath each.
Top Black Web series to watch
Here is our list of top Black web series to watch, featuring people of color, in no particular order:
The Number
One of several series of Black and Sexy TV, The Number follows a young couple that discusses ‘the number”. You know, that’s the one thing you never, ever discuss with your fiancé. Since the number was discussed, it continues to haunt Jason. The show is more comedic than dramatic. You’ll love it.
The Couple
The Couple is like the “sister” series of The Number. It follows a young black couple who’s dating and now living together. When I stumbled upon this series, I found myself at episode 4 entitled “Bad Neighbors”. It immediately drew my attention as I started remember the bad neighbor encounters I had. Desmond Faison & Numa Perrier, who star in the series, give such a comedic undertone, at the end I couldn’t help but laugh and become a new fan.
Awkward Black Girl
ABG (The Mis-Adventures of The Awkward Black Girl) follows Jay and friends as she navigates through life, love and awkward situations. After watching the first episode, I instantly loved it because Jay is me. I think this is the reason why so many people have gravitated towards this series because you can relate to it. When it first aired, it averaged over 100,000 views per episode. They went on a college tour and signed with Pharrell William’s I AM Other Network. ABG is now in its second season which aired its first episode on June 12th. Episodes air every second Thursday of the month.
Between Women
Between Women follows a group of friends in Atlanta, who experience daily life, love, fun, and “tests & trials of everyday living”. “Between Women will send you on an emotion roller coaster that you won’t want to stop riding!” And they couldn’t be more right about that. The series instantly became a hit averaging over 100,000 views per episode within only months of being online. Season 1 ended with a bang, and I’m sure season 2 will start off with a bigger bang. Check out Between Women’s Channel and catch up on a series you really don’t want to miss. No matter your sexual orientation, I think you’re going to enjoy this one. Go There if you dare.
Milk + Honey
Milk + Honey follows the spiritual, professional and romantic journeys of four young and ambitious women navigating the lights, smoke and mirrors of Hollywood. You’ll see some familiar faces like Debbie Allen, Lance Gross, Byrce Wilson, just to name a few. I think the production is great, and the plot is even greater. There’s only two episodes, but I’m sure more is coming.
Come Take A Walk With Me is definitely a web series that deserves more attention. Season 1 follows a girl named Channing who leaves home for college. The show takes you on a walk in her shoes, as she experiences new challenges in life from dealing with her family to relationships. The reason why this series made the list is because the storyline is good, and I believe it has even more potential when Season 2 airs. This is another show categorized as a “LGBT” web series, but it is most certainly more than that. Go check them out!
Fly Guys present: The ‘F’ Word
Created by Issa Rae, the series follows a group of friends who are rappers in real life that attempt to make their mark in the music industry.
The Unwritten Rules
Were you ever the only black person at your job? Based on the book, “40 Hours and an Unwritten Rule: The Diary of a N–ger, Negro, Colored, Black, African American Woman” (Butterfly Ink Publishing, 2004), the web-series examines the comedic realities of Racey Jones, an African American in a predominantly white workplace. I immediately drew to it because it reminded me of stories my father used to tell me working in a field where he was often the only black. The series is in its first season. New episodes air every Wednesday.
Venus vs. Mars
Venus vs. Mars is a UK series about the ups and downs of dating. The show follows the main character Venus, who tries to find the one but has a few stumbling blocks along the way.

Lenox Avenue
Lenox Avenue is a sexy dramatic series that follows of group of Harlem friends, as they learn that in relationships even with experience, there’s no playbook. The series stars Al Thompson-‘The Royal Tenenbaums’, Dorian Missick-‘Lucky Number, Ryan Vigilant – Gossip Girl. The season hasn’t premiered yet, but the trailer looks interesting. Although the trailer aired nearly two years ago, I heard the season is set to air sometime this summer.
Truth
It came out last year, but if you’re interested in watching a decent storyline, Truth is it. Truth is an urban high school story that deals with relationships, domestic violence, and other life issues. It only has four episodes, but it definitely is worth to watch.
