New York 13-year-old shot in the head while walking to school has died; GoFundMe launched
The attack occurred outside a Dunkin’ Donuts.
A gunman shot 13-year-old Sanjay Samuel on the morning of September 22 as he walked to school in Cambria Heights, Queens.
The attack occurred outside a Dunkin’ Donuts at the corner of Linden and Springfield boulevards around 8:20 a.m. Paramedics rushed Sanjay, a Martin Van Buren High School student, to Cohen Children’s Medical Center and placed him on life support.
He died Wednesday as a result of his sustained injuries.
Sanjay Samuel is remembered as joyful and kind
Sanjay’s family described him as a vibrant, fun-loving teen who brought joy to everyone around him. He loved basketball, fishing, dancing, and playing the drums. His passion for music filled their home with energy. According to the GoFundMe page, “Sanjay’s kindness and beautiful personality draw people to him… He cherishes every moment spent with family and friends.”
GoFundMe campaign created for support
In response to the tragedy, the community launched a GoFundMe campaign to support Sanjay and his family. The fundraiser quickly surpassed $16,000, reflecting widespread grief and solidarity. Donations will help cover medical and funeral expenses, as well as support the family during this devastating time.
Eyewitness Accounts and Suspect Description
Witnesses say the shooter was a young male with an afro, wearing a black hoodie, black pants, and white sneakers. He carried a backpack featuring the “JAWS” movie logo. After firing, he fled the scene on a moped. No arrests have been made as of Wednesday.
Investigation Continues in Sanjay Samuel’s fatal shooting
Police sources suggest a dispute may have preceded the shooting, though the motive remains unclear. The NYPD is actively investigating and urges anyone with information to come forward.
