Minneapolis to name street for George Floyd
The intersection where George Floyd died in Minneapolis police custody, will be named in his honor, the city announced.
City officials will name a part of Chicago Avenue and East 38th Street in honor of George Floyd. The intersection is where Floyd died in Minneapolis police custody.
Demonstrators and well-wishers have placed flowers and notes at the site since police detained Floyd there and he died.
The city will refer to the blocks between 37th and 39th streets as George Perry Floyd Jr. Place.
The City Council approved the renaming Friday, with Mayor Jacob Frey’s office confirming he will sign off on the change.
Minneapolis had planned to reopen 38th Street this summer, but decided not to when activists said they wanted it left as a memorial.
