Son of civil rights leader, Derek Steele, battles stage 4 prostate cancer, GoFundMe launched for support
Derek Steele, the son of late civil rights leader Rev. C.K. Steele, is fighting stage four prostate cancer while paying out of pocket for daily radiation treatments due to a lapse in insurance coverage.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Derek Steele, the son of late civil rights leader Rev. C.K. Steele, is fighting stage four prostate cancer while paying out of pocket for daily radiation treatments due to a lapse in insurance coverage, according to WCTV.
Derek Steele’s Diagnosis Reshaped His Life
Steele said his life changed two years ago when doctors diagnosed him with metastatic prostate cancer. He explained that the seriousness of his condition became clear during early procedures.
“Since the start of 2026, I’ve been undergoing treatment, but without health insurance,” SSteele told WCTV “A change in my policy and rising costs forced me into a difficult position.”
He continues daily radiation at HCA Florida Capital Cancer Center while waiting for his insurance to reactivate in July. Because he lacks coverage, he pays for each session himself.
Family Launches Fundraiser to Ease Financial Strain
Steele’s family has created a GoFundMe to help cover:
- Radiation treatments
- Medical bills
- Daily living needs
- Costs tied to his uninsured period
His daughter wrote that he faces the disease “with unwavering strength and courage” while enduring intense health challenges. She said love and community support can bridge gaps that the health‑care system often leaves behind.
Derek Steele Pushes Forward Despite Mounting Costs
Although the financial burden grows, Steele continues treatment with determination. He said the situation is overwhelming, yet he refuses to stop fighting.
He remains focused on recovery, even as he navigates the stress of paying out of pocket. His family hopes community support will allow him to prioritize healing rather than debt.
A Legacy of Service and Resilience
As the son of Rev. C.K. Steele, a central figure in the Tallahassee Bus Boycott and a major voice in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Derek Steele grew up in a family defined by courage and advocacy. His family says he now needs the same support his father once inspired across the South.
How the Community Can Help Derek Steele
Supporters can donate, share the fundraiser, or offer assistance as Steele continues daily treatment. His family says every contribution helps him stay focused on survival rather than financial hardship.
