Marissa Alexander could face up to 60 years in prison in retrial

Marissa Alexander is facing 60 years in her retrial set for March 31.

When I received this email in my inbox, I could only feel one way : IRATE. Why? Because the first thought that came to my mind was Trayvon Martin and Jordan Davis. I’ll explain why in a few.

If you don’t know the story of Marissa Alexander, let me break it down for you.

Marissa Alexander is a Black woman in the state of Florida who is accused of committing aggravated assault against her abusive husband.

The Jacksonville, FL woman fired a warning shot against her husband in attempts for him to leave her alone. I and others believe that it wasn’t ‘aggravated assault’ but self-defense against her husband who allegedly on several occasions beat her and almost killed her.

What makes me irate about this case is due – in part- to the sheer reverse racism. They couldn’t have made it more transparent. Marissa Alexander had a pretty good defense, but it only took less than 12 minutes for the jury to convict her.

It took less than two days for the jury to find Trayvon Martin’s killer not guilty of first-degree murder. It took the jury three days to find Jordan Davis’ killer not guilty on murder.

Marissa Alexander was sentenced to a mandatory 20 years in prison. Alexander successfully appealed the unjust trial and was granted a new trial. In November 2013, after serving nearly three years in prison, she was released on bond to home detention until her new trial.

But Angela Corey, the same prosecutor for Trayvon Martin’s trial and Jordan Davis’ trial, is now asking for Alexander’s new sentence to be 60 years if she is convicted.

Are you still saying the justice system is JUST?

Marissa Alexander used reasonable justifiable force to stop someone from harming her. I still believe that George Zimmerman and Michael Dunn have not provided enough justification for what they’ve done. But yet, they were not convicted and she has to prove her case AGAIN.

Because of Trayvon Martin and the stand your ground laws, the case has drew national attention. When the trial starts in about two weeks, I will be tuned in and commenting on this trial. I just hope that Marissa Alexander receives the justice that she deserves.
