Former Officer Roy Oliver Charged
On Friday afternoon, a Texas judge signed an arrest warrant for Roy Oliver, who on Saturday shot and killed Jordan Edwards as he left a party. Oliver will face a murder charge, The Dallas Morning News has reported.
Jordan Edwards fatally shot
The incident took place at a house party, where Oliver and another officer were called on reports of a house party with drunk teenagers.
Both Oliver and Jordan Edwards’s friends reported hearing gunshots at one point in the evening. When Edwards proceeded to leave the party with his brothers and friends in a car, the officers confronted them and broke the rear passenger window with a rifle. Oliver fired several shots into the car with the rifle, one of which struck Edwards in the head, killing him.
The chief of police first initially said Oliver fired because the vehicle was “reversing in an aggressive manner”.
Video footage
After viewing the body camera footage, he changed his account saying the officer fired when the car was “moving forward as the officers approached.” Jordan’s brothers and friends would witness his brutal killing, forced out the car, arrested, and later released without any charges.
The Dallas County medical examiner’s report ruled the death a homicide caused by a “rifle wound” to the head.
The shooting of Jordan Edwards, a student at Mequite High School, sparked national outrage leading to the firing of Oliver on Wednesday.
Oliver became an officer in Dalworthington Gardens near Fort Worth in 2010. Previously, he had been on active duty in the Army since 2004. According to records in the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, Oliver took precision rifle training and took a class on the use of force.
The funeral for Jordan Edwards will be held this Sunday, the family’s attorney has announced. It will not be open to the public.
