Nigerian news anchor dies after fall while fleeing armed robbery
Police say Somtochukwu “Sommie” Maduagwu jumped from her apartment in a desperate bid to flee the intruders.
Somtochukwu “Sommie” Maduagwu, a 29-year-old Nigerian news anchor and producer for Arise News, died Sept. 29 after falling from her third-floor apartment while attempting to escape armed robbers.
Nigerian News Anchor Somtochukwu “Sommie” Maduagwu Dies
According to a statement from Federal Capital Territory Police Commissioner Ajao S. Adewale, Maduagwu “tragically lost her life during an armed robbery incident at her residence” in Abuja, Nigeria during the early morning hours. Maduagwu was found unconscious outside her building and later died at a nearby hospital.
Police say Maduagwu jumped from her apartment in a desperate bid to flee the intruders. The incident has sparked widespread grief and calls for justice.
“This was a cruel and senseless act that has no place in a sane society,” Adewale said. He confirmed that a full investigation is underway and that intelligence teams have been deployed to track down the suspects.
Community remembers the beloved anchor woman
Maduagwu, who was also a lawyer, was widely known for her engaging presence on air and her commitment to social justice. Arise News described her as a “vibrant voice” who “connected deeply with viewers.”
“She was more than a journalist,” the station wrote in a tribute posted to Instagram. “Sommie was a professional, a friend, and a passionate advocate for change. Her voice is now silent, but her legacy endures.”
Tributes have poured in from colleagues, viewers, and loved ones. A memorial website honors her as a “phenomenal person” and “staunch advocate for women, girls, and education reform.”
Maduagwu’s death has reignited conversations about safety and gender-based violence in Nigeria. Her supporters are urging swift arrests and prosecution of those responsible.
“We remain in shock,” Arise News stated. “We call for a speedy investigation and justice for Sommie.”
Police have not yet released details about the suspects. The investigation remains active.
Maduagwu is survived by her parents, siblings, and a wide circle of friends and colleagues. Her impact, many say, will not be forgotten.
