Former NFL player Dr. Myron Rolle joins NFLPA as strategic advisor for player brain health and safety
WASHINGTON — The NFL Players Association has appointed pediatric neurosurgeon and former NFL safety Dr. Myron L. Rolle to new strategic advisory roles focused on player brain health, cognitive performance and long‑term safety, the union announced. The move strengthens the NFLPA’s push for evidence‑based approaches to neurological care across a player’s career.
A Unique Combination of Football Experience and Medical Expertise
Dr. Myron Rolle played safety at Florida State, earned a Rhodes Scholarship and later joined the Tennessee Titans before becoming a pediatric neurosurgeon. Because of that background, NFLPA leaders say he brings rare insight into both the demands of football and the science behind brain health.
Rolle will advise several NFLPA initiatives, including the Mackey‑White Health and Safety Committee. He will help guide research, education and policy recommendations related to neurological health, cognitive performance and long‑term outcomes for active and former players.
Strengthening Player Health and Safety
The NFLPA says Rolle will support expanded work on concussion‑baseline testing, mental‑health screening and preventive care. Moreover, he will help advance behavioral‑health initiatives designed to support players during and after their careers.
NFLPA medical director Thom Mayer said Rolle’s appointment adds essential expertise.
“He understands both the demands of the game and the science required to safeguard those who play it,” Mayer said. “His voice will strengthen our work and expand our capacity to advocate for players’ health and safety.”
Rolle Calls the Role a Full‑Circle Moment
Rolle said football shaped his life and the lives of his older brothers. He described the appointment as deeply meaningful.
“To return now, as a physician, researcher and former player, and contribute to the wellbeing of the men who make this game what it is, feels deeply meaningful,” he said.
The NFLPA says Rolle’s appointment reflects its commitment to long‑term player health, including brain safety, mental‑health support and improved quality of life after retirement. His advisory role is expected to influence future research, policy development and player‑care standards.
