BLK Dating App releases “State of Black Singles” report delving deep into thoughts on modern love and relationships
The report goes into a deep dive into modern love and relationships in the Black community.

BLK, the number one social and dating app for Black singles, has released its inaugural State of Black Singles report.
About the Black Singles report
The report goes into a deep dive into modern love and relationships in the Black community. Based on thousands of responses from Black singles across the U.S., the report reveals truths about preferences, the growing influence of social media on dating, and the shifting dynamics of love and commitment.
“We wanted to have a real conversation about what’s actually happening in Black dating culture—no fluff, no filters,” said Jonathan Kirkland, Head of Brand and Marketing at BLK. “This report proves that Black singles are pushing boundaries, redefining norms, and making their own rules when it comes to relationships, sex, and self-expression.”
BLACK SINGLES ARE MORE OPEN THAN EVER—BUT WITH LIMITS
The data reveals that Black singles are embracing modern intimacy exploration, but some taboos remain unbreakable.
“The idea of ‘taboo’ is fading. Black singles are owning their pleasure, exploring new experiences, and challenging outdated stigmas,” Kirkland noted. “From late-night rendezvous to open-minded experimentation, Black singles are redefining what intimacy and connection look like in 2025.”
SOCIAL MEDIA & DATING: DM SLIDERS AND VIRAL LOVE TRIANGLES
Social media is no longer just a place to flex—it’s where love, lust, and drama unfold:
- 17% of Black singles treat their DMs like a personal dating app.
- Twitter/X and TikTok are creeping into the dating scene, with 8.3% and 16.1% of respondents using them to find dates, respectively.
- Catfishing is still the #1 fear for 61% of Black singles navigating online dating.
- 38.2% believe Gen Z overshares too much about their relationships online, while 26.3% say they’re obsessed with viral moments and internet fame.
“Social media has turned dating into a spectator sport,” Kirkland said. “Whether it’s a messy viral breakup or someone shooting their shot in the DMs, Black singles are watching, engaging, and sometimes participating.”
RELATIONSHIP NORMS: TRADITIONAL VS. MODERN LOVE—THE GREAT DEBATE
The Black communityBlack community is split when it comes to dating expectations, marriage, and gender roles:
- Traditional gender roles aren’t dead yet: 29.9% of Black singles want men to lead and women to nurture, but 49.7% prefer a mix of traditional and modern values.
- The future of marriage is uncertain: While 34% still see it as a major life goal, nearly 33.5% have no interest in having children.
- Polyamory isn’t mainstream yet—but curiosity is growing: 28% of Black singles are open to it, but 41.7% remain strictly monogamous.
- Politics and love don’t always mix: 51.3% say they’d date someone with different political views, but 10.2% say it’s a dealbreaker.
IDENTITY & SELF-EXPRESSION: BLACK LOVE DESERVES BETTER REPRESENTATION
Despite growing conversations about diversity and inclusion, many Black singles still feel unseen:
- Only 25.7% feel fully represented on mainstream dating apps.
- 30.3% say mainstream media does a poor job of showcasing authentic Black love.
- More than 1 in 5 Black singles (21.8%) say they have to “code-switch” in dating spaces.
